Dinner of Stars

Lynn

We entered the lodge, and the noise rolled over me. The meal was somewhere between a late lunch and early dinner. It was oddly placed in the day, but since we had started so early and much of the talent had just arrived and were still on LA time, it made the most sense.

I knew all that because Amy had explained it to me before she whisked away my dripping-wet costume. I was a little sad to see it go.

She was the reason that I didn’t gawk when I noticed the stars at the table where I had previously sat, with a view of the ranch out of the two soaring windows that faced the valley where the creek flowed.

At the moment, the view was hazy from the rain, but it was set to clear up in a few hours then have beautiful weather for the next few weeks, which was perfect for the script.

My coveted seat was taken by a stunning brunette I recognized from some law drama I had seen a few episodes of. She was across from a serious man that I had seen in a historical movie earlier in the year. The rest of the table was full of the same: shiny, attractive actors that all seemed either vaguely familiar or absolutely recognizable. The whole table glowed with celebrityhood, and I almost had to turn away from their glory.

At the head of the table were Mitch and Ben.

Though I had gotten to know Mitch and Ben the past few days, they suddenly looked like strangers to me. They looked so right and in place talking to a group of celebrities. I pulled my fluffy cardigan tighter around me, and the last glimmer of hope about something serious between Ben and me faded away.

How could I have fooled myself that a guy so desperately out of my league could be interested in me? Clearly the chemistry was real, and he had just gotten caught up in the moment. It was like when you are at the fair and you have a deep-fried candy bar. You would never eat that on the normal day, but something about the smell of horses and funnel cakes together makes your brain go haywire.

Now that he was back amongst his own kind, he would notice that I was just a raggedy mule next to show horses.

Franny leaned over. “You need to breathe.”

I took a gasping breath. “I think my heart stopped.”

“You have to get over this. You are so easily intimidated.”

I shook my head a little. “I know. But I think most people look that way at famous actors.”

“And you are in the same exact movie they are in. In fact, you cowrote the movie. They should be intimidated by you and your huge brain.”

I rolled my eyes. “Sure.”

She stepped toward me, pushing me out of the way so some of the crew could go outside to smoke and she could get more into my space. “I’m serious, Lynn. You have always been a bit bowled over by fame, and you need to get over it.
